What's Happening

Maple Sugarbush Festival
and Pancake Breakfast

March 7 & 8, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To taste pure maple syrup is to taste a product born of the pure essence of nature. Or as American naturalist and essayist John Burroughs describes this maple magic, ". . . it has a wild delicacy of flavor that no other sweet can match."

On March 7 & 8, you and your family will have an opportunity to sample some of our home grown maple syrup from Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve during the Maple Sugarbush Festival and Pancake Breakfast.

This event is a celebration of the maple sugar harvest from the trees of the Preserve. Visitors of all ages will be guided through the woods to observe how sap harvested from the sugar maple trees becomes the pure maple syrup that we all love to pour over hotcakes. Each visitor is served a hearty breakfast that includes sausage, all-you-can-eat pancakes with pure maple syrup (from one of Indiana's own maple sugarbushes), and a beverage.

We welcome you to join us for this local tradition of discovery and fun in the Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve!

$7 adults (13 and over); $4 youths; children under age 4 are free! Discounts for WNS Members! Tickets are sold at the event.

January '09 Ice Storm

Hazardous conditions created
by the ice storm in late January triggered the closing of
Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve and Howell Wetlands
for nearly a week and a half.

Now that the majority of the storm debris has been cleared away,
trails at both Wesselman Woods
Nature Preserve and Howell Wetlands have also reopened.

One of the large limbs that fell during the ice storm crushed several sections of fence,
destroyed a sign telling the history of the Preserve, and damaged a section of the awning just in front
of the WWNP Nature Center (see the photo below).

Below is another photograph
of the tree's canopy from which
this limb fell!
