Sunday Sustainability Series
January 25, 2 to 4 p.m.
This week's topics:
Water Resources & Forest Resources
This four-part adult seminar series: Energy, Economy, and Environment. Discusses interrelationship and interdependency of energy and economy on different facets of our environment. Programs led by Dr. Greg Valentine, Director of the Center for Economic Education at the University of Southern Indiana (USI). The topics remaining in this series are as follows:
January 25: Water Resources & Forest Resources
Water Resources - Society and individuals confront a very real problem of pollution of our lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater. This pollution occurs because water resources are often commonly owned and, therefore, tend to be overused. In this segment, we will utilize the concept of marginalism to discuss this problem.
Forest Resources - Forest management in the United States has improved greatly since the early part of this century when our forests were often abused. Forest growth today is improving steadily, even in the face of increasing demand for wood products. In this segment, discussion will center on forest management and the controversial issues that confront policymakers.
February 8: Energy & Alternative Energy
Energy & Alternative Energy - In recent months, there has been a renewed interest in the topic of renewable energy due in large part to the increase in the price of oil and natural gas and the perceived vulnerability of the US to an increasing dependence on foreign energy supplies. In this segment, discussion will center on the advantages and disadvantages of various alternative sources of energy, ways to maximize one's energy efficiency, and how much do fossil fuels damage the environment.
February 22: Land Fills/Global Warming
Land Fills/Global Warming - There still remains some scientific uncertainty about global warming, this makes it a challenge for public policy makers, who must decide whether or not to implement costly greenhouse gas reduction policies which may yield uncertain results far into the future. In this segment, discussion will focus on why the issue of greenhouse warming involves spillover costs and that public policy decisions involve trade-offs among goals along with the identification of advantages and disadvantages of a carbon tax.
The curriculum is sponsored by the IN Council for Economic Education. The series is free for those attending thanks to platinum sponsor Hafer Associates, a local architectural, engineering, planning and interior design firm.
The Sunday Sustainability Series is held at the Wesselman Woods Nature Center. Registration is required; call 812-479-0771 ext. 102 to reserve your seat!
