Animals utilize their different senses to survive in the wild. Hawks and falcons have excellent eye sight. Owls have awesome hearing. But did you know some creatures are able
to smell with their tongue?
Snakes smell by sticking their tongues out and capturing air molecules around them. The
end of a snake’s tongue is forked so it can be placed it in two small holes in the roof of
the snake’s mouth. A Jacobsen’s organ then
processes the molecules captured on the tongue to help indicate to the snake whether they are from prey or another predator.
To see snakes and other reptiles and amphibians that are native to our area, join us for Reptile Roundup, a special event at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve on Saturday, June 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
