Become a Master Naturalist

Wesselman Nature Society (WNS) is proud to present our third annual Indiana Master Naturalist program, a 12 week course designed to provide nature lovers with an enlightening yet intensive look at Indiana’s natural history and natural resources.

The course is designed to expose participants to a variety of subjects such as the following:

  • Ecological principles
  • Geology and Soils
  • Natural Habitats
  • Wetland and River-system Ecology
  • Tree Identification
  • Wildflower Identification
  • Songbirds and Raptors
  • Mammals of S.W. Indiana
  • Tracking Wildlife
  • Herpetology
  • Entomology
  • Interpretation Techniques

Each week, class is taught by a natural resource specialist (Indiana DNR naturalists, local university professors, WNS naturalists, and other experts). Speakers often teach through a combination of presentations and demonstrations that often include hands on activities related to the topic. As weather permits, classes extend to the field as well through guided hikes.

Participants in the Master Naturalist program are asked to give back by volunteering 40 hours of service in WNS programs, events, or other projects that fulfill our mission. The course begins on January 11th, 2010 and spans a busy time of year that includes several events, school field-trips, and the opening of canoe season. Upon completing the course, taking a written exam, and fulfilling 40 hours of service, Master Naturalists are awarded an Indiana Master Naturalist certificate, a membership pin, and a member newsletter from the Indiana Master Naturalist Program.

Master Naturalist graduates will have ample opportunities to share their life experiences and knowledge by providing volunteer leadership and service to their communities. Those interested in volunteering as a docent (volunteer educator), or trail guide would benefit greatly from completing the program.

Registration for this course is now open. To be sure you are included in this popular class, call as soon as possible to reserve your spot! For more information about the course or to register, please contact Lauren Preske at 479-0771, ext. 102.
