VOLUNTEER AT HOWELL WETLANDS

We depend heavily on volunteers to help us maintain and monitor Howell Wetlands and provide quality education programs (there is only one part-time staff member dedicated to doing it all). Wouldn't you like to be part of the Howell Wetlands Conservation Corps?

We need stewards to help:

  • Keep watch over the property to monitor for vandalism or other problems that may arise.
  • Trash clean-up.
  • Maintain the trails when needed, via mulching, trimming back vegetation and repairing boardwalks.
  • Build, construct and design facilities, ie. signs, boardwalks and shelters.
  • Conduct water quality monitoring using a Hoosier Riverwatch Kit (we can loan to you).
  • Be a trail guide for school kids and other large groups.
  • Help with special event planning and staffing.
  • Coordinate volunteers.
  • Serve on the Howell Wetlands Committee, a subcommittee of the Wesselman Nature Society Board of Directors, to help come up with new ideas and make management decisions on grounds and facility design and maintenance; educational programs for schools and public groups; community support and involvement; and promoting use of the property as an outdoor classroom and destination.
  • Bring together people who care for their environment and community to foster great fun, great relationships and great work.

We also need many improvements at the Wetlands. If you would like to lead a community service project for your group, please see our wish list for projects that need to be completed. You can always bring us ideas of your own!

If you would like to contribute to the success of Howell Wetlands and its programs in any of these areas, please contact the Program Manager, Lauren Preske at (812) 499-2952 or lpreske@wesselmannaturesociety.org. We need you!
